Message Level Restore

Backup and restore of individual mail server objects (emails, contacts, calendar entries, etc). MLR allows for the restore of individual emails or folders without taking the mail server offline.

In today’s corporate world, email represents one of the most critical business tools. Backing up and, more importantly, restoring this data in a fast and efficient manner is more valuable than ever. The core DS3 DataVaulting offering provides complete backup, restore and disaster recovery capabilities for a corporate enterprise, including email information stores. The optional Message Level Restore (MLR) features allows backup and restore with granularity down to the individual email object ( message, contact, etc). An individual mailbox, folder or email can easily be restored without taking the email server offline.

With the Message Level Restore (MLR) feature of DS3 DataVaulting for the Enterprise, each mailbox, folder and object (messages, contacts, etc) can be backed up and restored individually. When an individual mailbox, folder or object needs to be restored, it can be done so via a simple point and click graphical user interface without taking the email server offline. This feature is perfect for restores of individual objects (messages, contacts, etc) that are accidentally deleted or that are requested for litigation discovery.

How it works

Backup — During the MLR backup, the information store is scanned and all new and changed email objects (e.g. messages or contacts) are backed up individually. You can choose to back up mailboxes, folders within mailboxes and/or objects (such as emails) within folders. See Figure 1.

Restore — During a restore, any single object (mailbox, folder or message) can be restored to the original user’s mailbox or an administrator’s mailbox. See Figure 2.

What is Supported

Exchange — Supported objects include emails, notes, tasks, appointments, contacts and activities from the user mailboxes plus documents from the public folders.

GroupWise — Supported objects include emails, notes, tasks, appointments, notifications and phone messages from the user mailboxes.

Lotus/Domino — Supported objects are limited to mail from the user mailbox databases.

Outlook — Supported objects include emails, notes, tasks, appointments, contacts and activities contained in the PST file on a PC (laptop or desktop).

Applications

A customer with Exchange will employ the information store back up for disaster recovery purposes and the MLR back up for individual mailbox restores. For Lotus/Domino and Groupwise environments, the MLR provides the primary method by which emails are backed up and restored. For Outlook users, MLR provides the mechanism to back up and restore PST files. Call DS3 today and let us architect the ideal solution for your environment.
