LAN Discovery
Detailed analysis of your corporate infrastructure with myriad reports, both predefined and customizable. Use LAN Discovery before a full DS3 implementation to assess backup needs and after a full DS3 implementation to determine backup efficiencies.
The LAN Storage Discovery Tool is useful both before and after a customer begins using DS3 DataVaulting. Before the customer implements DS3 DataVaulting, the tool can be used to analyze a customer’s entire concentration of data on the LAN by generating reports that help identify possible storage inefficiencies. These reports help estimate the customer’s backup needs. Once a customer is using DS3 DataVaulting, the tool can help them improve their data storage design, resulting in better WAN utilization and lower backup costs. Some of the most useful information arising from the use of the LAN Storage Discovery tool is the identification of redundancies (duplicate files), the number of files that change over time, and the amount of data growth. All information is presented via user-friendly reports.
Benefits
Using the LAN Storage Discovery Tool helps customers:
- Increase server availability and performance
- Isolate storage issues before conducting a costly backup
- Reduce backup window time
- Optimize network disk space
- Determine which files are critical, important, and stagnant
Reports
After the LAN Storage Discovery Tool analyses your LAN, it presents the data in user-friendly report formats. These reports can be viewed through the standard DS-User interface or through the Web Portal Tool. The data can also be exported to text, Excel or HTML format.
Access Report - Lists top largest files whose access time is within the specified interval, for each share: intervals are less than one day, one week, one month, one year, and over one year. Pie charts and tables show access time (days, weeks, months or years), number of files and size in MB.

File Extensions - Lists extensions in use on the LAN or a specific share of the LAN. This is an ideal way to discover files that should not be part of your infrastructure (e.g. MP3 files). This report includes both a pie chart and a table.

Growth - Growth Sorts files by growth (negative and positive) over time. Options allow you to choose a report period, interval in days, whether to show all shares or just specific share, and whether to show total or new files only.

Ownership - Lists total storage for each owner of each share as well as the overall size.
Duplicates - Lists top the largest duplicate files, as well as total number of duplicate files and percentage this number represents, as well as total size of these files compared to the entire LAN.

Index of Reports - Provides a hyperlinked list of all generated reports (Web Portal users only). An example of such a Web page is shown below. The page shows the Exchange server Web page.
